Summer Days to the Rhythm of Seto Music
For centuries, Seto culture has been primarily an oral tradition, with its core values passed down through song. The Seto people are best known for their distinctive singing tradition, Seto leelo. They are also a people of dance: in almost every village, there is a tsura (young man) who gets the celebrations going with music, usually played on the karmoška, a traditional accordion. Seto dances are lively and full of emotion – much like the Seto people themselves. Seto traditional clothing is equally distinctive, especially the impressive silver jewellery worn by women. At Telegrup’s summer days, we immersed ourselves in the authentic Seto culture. Through singing, dancing and a variety of hands-on workshops, the participants embarked on an almost five-hour journey into the traditions of Setomaa. It was an experience that brought them right to the heart of the local culture. Craft workshops, sõir cheese making, traditional music, homemade beer brewing and many other activities filled the day, giving participants the chance to experience Seto culture for themselves rather than simply learn about it. All of this took place in Treski, in the heart of Setomaa. The evening was always brought to a close with an incredible performance by Zetod.
